Friday Five: Innovating Through Generations
Happy Friday Hospitality Hero,
I’m frequently amazed by multi-generational family businesses. For instance, Kongo Gumi, a Japanese construction company, has existed for nearly 1,400 years, and a Japanese Ryokan (inn) founded in 718 AD has been operated by 46 generations. Our hospitality industry offers entrepreneurial families the ability to create multi-generational businesses in ownership, operations, management, design, products, and beyond. Enjoy as we innovate through the generations.
The Friday Five
1. This Week's Feature: John Hardy, founder of the Hardy Group, Radical Innovation (which I’m honored to MC in October), and many more ventures, was on Defining Hospitality this week. Listen to the full episode to hear how he started his company and set it up for the next generation’s success. He also created the non-profit “Radical Innovation,” which I call an open-sourced think tank, to push the envelope of what the built environment in Hospitality can become.
2. Memory Lane: I have the honor and pleasure of being business partners with Misha Bedner, whose dad, Michael Bedner, co-founder of HBA, “the world’s #1 Design Firm”, can be credited as the Godfather of and “scaling” the world of Hospitality Design. He launched countless careers and inspired many, including yours truly. Check out Michael’s thoughts on inspiring others to start their own businesses.
3. A Dash of Inspiration: Summer is here, and what better way to enjoy it than with this solar-powered Gloster Light Ambient light I just unboxed last week? No plugs; just hit the remote and chill!
4. Journey Shorteners: Stephen Covey has written many books, but “Trust and Inspire” resonated with me deeply, especially when reflecting on the many careers, including mine, that Michael Bedner launched. As “Hospitality Heroes” and leaders, inspiration is the greatest gift we can give others. I hope this book ignites a spark within you and helps sharpen both your and those around you’s proverbial saws.
5. Upcoming Industry Events: Below is a list of exciting industry events where we can connect, learn, and grow together. Let's continue to build our hive and support one another on this incredible journey!
